Freedom in Movement Starts with the Hips: Why Hip Joints Matter — Especially If You Sit a Lot.
Most of us spend a lot of time sitting — at the computer, behind the wheel, or at the table. In this position, the hip joints remain in constant flexion, which over time leads to reduced mobility, lower back tension, stiffness while walking, and even knee discomfort.
Why care about your hip joints? They are key connection points between the legs and the spine. When the hips are mobile, the body moves with ease and stability. When they are tight, the load shifts to other areas — the lower back, knees, and feet. This affects posture, balance, gait, and even breathing.
A short practice:
Sit at the edge of a chair with your feet directly under your knees.
Feel your sitting bones.
Begin gently rocking your pelvis forward and backward — slightly changing the angle of your hips.
Then make slow circular movements with your pelvis, as if drawing a circle on the chair.
Notice how your back, neck, and legs respond.
This practice takes just a few minutes but helps restore mobility and reconnect your hips with the rest of the body.
What does working with the hips improve?— Reduces lower back tension— Improves posture— Increases ease of movement— Enhances breathing and walking— Creates a deeper sense of stability and comfort in the body
