Why Regular Somatic Practice Matters as We Age
As we grow older, our bodies naturally change — joints become stiffer, balance may decrease, and energy levels fluctuate. While aging is a natural process, the discomfort and limitations that often come with it don’t have to be inevitable.
Gentle, mindful movement — like the practices taught in Hanna Somatics and the Feldenkrais Method — can make a profound difference, even when done online.
Common age-related challenges that somatics can help improve:
✔️ Chronic muscle tension and pain – especially in the neck, lower back, hips, and shoulders
✔️ Poor posture and loss of mobility
✔️ Impaired balance and coordination, increasing the risk of falls
✔️ Shallow breathing and low energy
✔️ Sleep difficulties, nervous system dysregulation, and emotional tension
Why is somatic work so effective?
Somatic methods are based on re-educating the nervous system. Through slow, gentle movements and focused awareness, the brain learns to release habitual tension, restore natural posture, and move with greater ease. Unlike traditional fitness, somatics is not about pushing limits. It’s about reconnecting with your body — softly, safely, and at your own pace.
The power of regular practice
While even one session can bring noticeable relief, consistency is key.
Just 1–2 sessions per week can gradually improve mobility, reduce pain, enhance balance, and restore confidence in everyday movement.
Can online classes work?
Absolutely. Many older adults benefit from online somatic sessions, as they can practice from the comfort and safety of their homes. With clear verbal guidance and simple movements (often done while seated or lying down), online somatics offers accessible, effective support for healthy aging.
You are never too old to feel better in your body.
Gentle movement. Deep awareness. Real change — at any age.

When Do You Need a Private Somatic Session?
Group somatic classes are a wonderful way to get to know the method, reconnect with your body, and restore ease of movement. But in some cases, the most effective results come through individual work with a therapist.
Both the Feldenkrais Method and Thomas Hanna Somatics offer gentle, educational approaches, where personal movement habits, patterns of tension, and emotional responses play a key role. A private session allows for deep and precise work, fully tailored to your body.
Who can benefit most from individual sessions?
1. Chronic pain or muscle tension
When pain becomes long-lasting, the body needs gentle, targeted re-education. Private sessions help identify where tension is "stuck" and restore movement through awareness.
2. Post-injury or post-surgery recovery
The healing process requires care and adaptive movement. Somatics helps rebuild trust in the body and avoid compensatory patterns, gradually restoring balance.
3. Asymmetry or movement limitations
If one side of the body moves differently, if turning or walking feels restricted — an individual session can address specific patterns and bring the body back into balance.
4. Anxiety, panic, or deep fatigue
Somatic work with breath, neck, face, and ribcage can gently regulate the nervous system. In a private setting, the pace and focus can be adapted to your current emotional state.
5. When you feel disconnected from your body
Common concerns include: "I don’t feel anything in my body" or "I don’t know where I’m holding tension." In a group, this can be hard to explore. In a private session, we move slowly and attentively to rebuild sensitivity and awareness.
What makes a private session different?
-
Movements are tailored to your body and current needs
-
The pace and complexity are fully adapted to you
-
You can go deeper into a specific issue or area
-
Space for dialogue, questions, and gentle exploration
Should I stop attending group classes?
Not at all! Group sessions offer regularity, rhythm, support, and connection. But if you feel that:
-
it’s hard to stay focused in a group,
-
you have a personal issue or pain,
-
you want to understand your body more deeply —
then private sessions and group classes can beautifully complement each other.
