Breathing: The Art of Living in a Time of Change
Somatic ON-LINE workshop
April 5 (Sunday), 12:00 - 16:00
We, Katya Zilbershtein and Natasha Guseva, have decided to hold an online anti-virus workshop on April 5: "Breath: The Art of Living in an Era of Change."
In the current situation, there is unease, anxiety, a sense of losing our usual supports, and uncertainty. Life is offering us difficult circumstances and challenging us all to answer the question: how can we live a joyful life in an era of uncertainty and change?
Let this anti-virus workshop be our collective contribution to the world—a way to care for our physical and emotional well-being and to support one another.
Why Focus on Breath?
It is known that this virus affects the lungs. Measures are being taken, treatments are underway, and hopefully, a vaccine will be developed soon. While scientists are hard at work, we can take personal hygiene measures—and emotional hygiene as well!
Looking into various sources where experts share their experiences with breathwork on a metaphysical level, we’ve synthesized their insights into something relevant to our current situation.
Moshe Feldenkrais, in his book "Awareness Through Movement," wrote in Lesson 12 "Thinking and Breathing" that:
"Many techniques use breathing as a key to personal improvement. Many people do not take advantage of the increase in vitality that can be gained through full and regular breathing in alignment with the nervous and physical structure of the human body. In this lesson, we will try to master a form of breathing that easily becomes a habit and enhances a person’s abilities."
Liz Burbo noted:
"The lungs are the primary organ of respiration, responsible for oxygenating the blood. They are directly linked to life, the desire to live, and the ability to experience joy, as they deliver oxygen to the body’s cells, without which we cannot survive."
Vulnerability to respiratory infections can indicate accumulated grief and difficult relationships with life, often accompanied by anger and denial of events, people, or emotions. This duality hinders our ability to breathe deeply and freely while increasing the need for emotional freedom and mental lightness.
Here, we can take the initiative to care for the quality of our respiratory system and reclaim a sense of joy and calm.
